FAQ - Frequently asked questions about our recording studio

What does it cost to rent your studio?

The daily rate for our recording studio is € 250 per day. Alternatively, the studio can also be booked by the hour, the hourly rate is € 35 per hour. The studio is always booked including a sound engineer. In our price list you will also find special offers for singers and bands. We would be happy to make you an individual offer on request! How long does it take for a song?

The duration for the production depends very much on what exactly you want to record in our studios. For example, if you want to sing on an existing instrumental or record rap on a beat you’ve brought with you, it usually takes 2-3 hours for recording, mixing & mastering. In a typical rock / pop band production (e.g. with drums, bass, guitar / s & vocals), you can expect an average of 1-2 days for recording, mixing and mastering per song. Bands that record several songs within one production save time because assembly and dismantling times, the search for the right sound etc.

Can I record with my band in your studio?

We love to work with all kinds of music groups. Of course, you can record and produce your song, EP or album in our studios with your band in a classic rock / pop line-up. We attach great importance to a detailed preliminary discussion in order to implement the vision and wishes of the whole band with passion and respect. Optimal preparation of our technology and facilities before the recording session are a matter of course for us.

Can I record rap with you guys?

Of course, rappers can also record their tracks in our recording studio. Usually hip-hop & rap artists bring their beats ready into the studio. After discussing the desired style, we can also produce beats and compositions.

How does a recording studio work?

A recording studio is a combination of rooms and technology. The smallest version of a recording studio consists of a microphone, an audio interface, a computer and a listening facility such as loudspeakers or headphones. A conventional music studio usually consists of a control room (this is where most of the technical equipment is housed) and at least one separate recording room, often called a studio. The communication between technician and artist takes place by means of the typical observation window and the so-called talkback microphone. The Talback microphone, which is located in the control room, is activated by pressing a button as long as there is communication. It is deactivated during the recording so that the artist does not hear any disturbing noises from the control room.

The typical signal flow in a professional recording studio is as follows:

  • Typically the microphone that is used to record vocals, for example, is in the recording room.
  • Then the signal from the microphone is sent to the mixer or audio interface in the control room via a microphone cable.
  • From the audio interface and / or mixer it goes on to the recording medium, nowadays usually a computer.
  • After that the computer sends the recorded signal back to the audio interface.
  • The recorded sounds are then sent from the audio interface or mixer to the loudspeakers in the control room so that the sound engineer can monitor the recording.
  • At the same time, the recorded signal is sent back to the recording room. The singer hears himself and the music through headphones.

What is mixing actually?

When mixing, the individual tracks (instruments, vocals & sound effects) are brought into the right ratio. What is the “right” ratio depends very much on the ideas of the artist and the musical style. Depending on which instruments and components of a song are important for the performer, these are precisely emphasized and mixed into the foreground. This is done by setting the volume, by the position in the panorama (more from the left or right speaker) but also by adding effects such as reverb and echo. An instrument with a higher reverb content is perceived as being further away. A dry signal without reverberation appears more direct to the listener, as if the vocals were, for example, right at the front of the stage. Artistic effects such as telephone voice, chorus, flanger, delays and many more are also incorporated into the mixing. Mixing is therefore always a creative process.

Do you also offer online mixing?

Of course, we also offer an online mixing service. In a preliminary talk by phone or video chat, we clarify your wishes and determine the most important elements of your music production for you. You are welcome to send us a rough version of your music recording before the meeting. After receiving your tracks via online data transfer, e.g. via Wetransfer or Dropbox, we will create an initial mix. When it comes to the final mixing phase, we will be happy to bring you to the studio via video conference. You can then help determine the subtleties of the mix.

What is (pre-) mastering?

With mastering, or more precisely with pre-mastering, your music production or voice recording is optimally prepared for publication on various media. Volume levels between different tracks on a CD are matched to one another. We also make sure that the production sounds as good as possible on as many playback systems as possible (e.g. kitchen radio, smartphone or hi-fi system). Artistic interventions do not play as big a role here as they do with mixing. A market-relevant volume level is achieved through the use of compressors and limiters. On request, we can also specifically master for Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal & Co. in order to meet the specified volume criteria and avoid a loudness penalty.

Mastering as an online service

Why do you use headphones in the recording studio?

In the recording studio, the artist usually hears himself and the music he sings or plays with through headphones. There is a simple reason for this: When recording with a microphone, you usually only want the voice or the instrument on the recording. You would hear the music on the vocal recording when it is played through speakers in the recording room. This in turn interferes with processing during mixing.

Record music in the home studio vs. professional recording studio, which is better?

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Recording music in your own home studio is stress-free and costs nothing, provided you have already purchased the necessary equipment. You don’t have any time pressure and if things don’t go well, you try again the next day. At the latest with mixing & mastering, home studio owners usually reach the limits of what is possible. Elaborate room acoustics and corresponding monitoring loudspeakers are beyond the budget and the spatial possibilities. It is almost always advisable to entrust the mastering to a professional.

In addition to the high-quality technical and room acoustics equipment, the experience of the technician speaks for the music production in the professional recording studio. In the professional studio, the artist or the band can concentrate fully on the music without having to worry about the technology. If you also consider which purchases are necessary to create high-quality drum or live band recordings, the professional studio is often even cheaper than the home studio.

In practice, a mix of work in the home and professional studio is recommended. In the home studio you create a pre-production. With the professional you are optimally prepared for the final recordings. You can work out arrangements in the home studio. You can easily create guide tracks at home to help you capture the first tracks in the recording studio. All of this saves expensive studio time and leads to a smoother overall result.
We will be happy to advise you on pre-production and give valuable tips for working in the home studio.

Bachelor or birthday in the music studio, how does it work?

In a preliminary talk we set a date and the songs. Let us know how many people come to us in the studio. We will then look for suitable playback versions for you and send you links under which you can buy and download the instrumental versions. As soon as you have purchased the playbacks, you can send us the files. We will then prepare everything else.

You come to the studio at the agreed time. We need about 1-2 hours per song for recording and subsequent editing. Meanwhile, your companions can make themselves comfortable on the studio couch or in our garden lounge.

You will receive the finished song with your vocal performance, as a very special memory of this unique day, directly afterwards via Dropbox on your smartphone or, if you wish, on CD or USB stick. So your song can accompany you all day and beyond.

A birthday or bachelorette party in the recording studio is an unforgettable and special event.
